Reading the opener display

A garage door opener reports faults through blinking LEDs on the motor head, a diagnostic window on the logic board, or the wall control. Count the flashes slowly and repeat the count before you decide what you saw. Genie counts blinks on its LEDs; the number of blinks, not their speed, identifies the fault.

Genie, from The Overhead Door Corporation, signals faults by blinking LEDs on the motor head and by wall-console diagnostics. Genie blink counts differ from LiftMaster, so do not use a LiftMaster chart for a Genie opener. The codes apply to model numbers such as H8000 and ISD990; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.

What causes 1 blink

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the opener, wait five seconds, plug it back in and run it from the wall console; the first cycle runs slowly.
  2. If it blinks again, disconnect the trolley and check that the door lifts easily and stays about halfway open.
  3. Inspect the springs, rollers and track for wear or binding.
  4. Look at the fuse on the motor drive board and make sure the ribbon cable is fully seated in the controller board connector.
  5. Replace the motor drive board if the fault stays after the door and wiring check out.

Questions

What does one blink mean on a Genie Excelerator?

The motor drive board was interrupted; reset power first, then check door balance.

Why is the first cycle slow after a reset?

Genie runs the first cycle slowly to relearn the door.

Is a bad spring the cause?

It can be. The balance sensor reports a poorly balanced door as a one-blink fault.
