Reading the opener display
A garage door opener reports faults through blinking LEDs on the motor head, a diagnostic window on the logic board, or the wall control. Count the flashes slowly and repeat the count before you decide what you saw. Craftsman openers follow the Chamberlain flash chart.
Craftsman garage door openers are made by the Chamberlain Group under license, so they share the LiftMaster and Chamberlain diagnostic codes. Look for a model number starting with 139. on the label. Check the model label on your unit before using any chart.
What causes 1-2
- The two wires touching each other at a splice or terminal
- White and black conductors swapped at one end after a repair
- A staple or nail through the cable pinching both conductors
- Water or corrosion bridging the terminals
How to fix it
- Disconnect both sensor wire pairs from the opener terminals and note which wire went where.
- Inspect the full run for staples, crushed spots and bare copper touching.
- Cut out and replace any damaged section; twist and cap splices separately.
- Reconnect with matching colors at both ends (white to white, black to black).
- Reapply power and test the close cycle.

Questions
What causes the 1-2 code?
A short or reversed wire between the Craftsman opener and its safety sensors, often from staples or a pinched cable.
Can I just replace the sensors?
Replace wires first. New sensors will not help if the cable is shorted.
How long must the fault last to show 1-2?
Reports say the opener flags it after the short persists for a few seconds.
