LG Dishwasher Error Code AE: Meaning and Fix

Also shown as: E1, EI, RE
Reading the dishwasher display
A dishwasher reports its fault in the display window, or by blinking a cycle light a set number of times with a pause between groups. Count the blinks and pauses before opening the door. LG codes are short letter pairs; a capital O differs from a zero.
LG appliances show short alphabetic codes (OE, IE, UE on washers, Er plus letters on refrigerators) and, on ThinQ models, a Smart Diagnosis option. LG also builds many Kenmore Elite units. The codes apply to model numbers such as LDF7774ST, LDT5678SS and DLEX3900B; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.
What causes AE
- A leak at the door seal, hose clamp or fitting
- Stuck or failed float switch
- Too much detergent or dish soap creating suds
- Water poured into the Heat Dry blower instead of the softener
- Dishwasher not level, letting water slosh over
How to fix it
- Open the door, take out the bottom rack and look for water standing in the base.
- Place a level against the tub and adjust the feet so the unit sits flat side to side and front to back.
- Mop up water in the drain pan, wipe the seals and check hose clamps for drips.
- Use only dishwasher detergent in the recommended amount, never dish soap.
- Unplug or switch off the breaker for a minute, then plug in and run a short cycle.
- If AE returns with no water inside, replace the float switch and have the unit inspected.

Questions
Can I keep running the dishwasher with AE?
No. The error protects against leaks, and running it can flood the kitchen floor.
Why does dish soap cause AE?
Dish soap foams heavily, and the suds can overflow into the base where the sensor reads them as a leak.
What is the Heat Dry blower cap mistake?
Some models have two caps. Pouring softener salt water into the blower leaks into the base. Make sure you fill the softener only.
