Reading the opener display

A garage door opener reports faults through blinking LEDs on the motor head, a diagnostic window on the logic board, or the wall control. Count the flashes slowly and repeat the count before you decide what you saw. On LiftMaster the Learn button color and the count of flashes together identify the board.

LiftMaster, from the Chamberlain Group, is the professional-installer line. Its openers with a yellow Learn button report faults as LED flash counts or two-digit diagnostic codes such as 1-1 or 4-5 on the logic board. The codes apply to model numbers such as 8500W and 87504-267; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.

What causes 1-2

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect both sensor wire pairs from the opener terminals and note which wire went where.
  2. Inspect the full run for staples, crushed spots and bare copper touching.
  3. Cut out and replace any damaged section; twist and cap splices separately.
  4. Reconnect with matching colors at both ends (white to white, black to black).
  5. Reapply power and test the close cycle.

Questions

What causes the 1-2 code?

A short or reversed wire between the LiftMaster opener and its safety sensors, often from staples or a pinched cable.

Can I just replace the sensors?

Replace wires first. New sensors will not help if the cable is shorted.

How long must the fault last to show 1-2?

Reports say the opener flags it after the short persists for a few seconds.
