LiftMaster Opener Error Code 1-4: Meaning and Fix

Also shown as: 14, Up 1 Down 4
Reading the opener display
A garage door opener reports faults through blinking LEDs on the motor head, a diagnostic window on the logic board, or the wall control. Count the flashes slowly and repeat the count before you decide what you saw. On LiftMaster the Learn button color and the count of flashes together identify the board.
LiftMaster, from the Chamberlain Group, is the professional-installer line. Its openers with a yellow Learn button report faults as LED flash counts or two-digit diagnostic codes such as 1-1 or 4-5 on the logic board. The codes apply to model numbers such as 8500W and 87504-267; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.
What causes 1-4
- A sensor bumped out of line by a vehicle, bike or yard tool
- Dirt, cobwebs or snow on a lens
- A loose sensor bracket
- Direct sunlight hitting the receiving lens
How to fix it
- Clear anything from the beam path and wipe both lenses with a soft cloth.
- Check both sensor lights; they should be steady, not dim or flashing.
- Loosen the wing nut on the misaligned bracket and aim until the receiving indicator is solid.
- Tighten the brackets and shade the receiver from sun if needed.
- Run a close cycle to confirm.

Questions
How do I fix 1-4 on a LiftMaster garage door opener?
Wipe and realign the safety sensors until both lights are steady.
Do both sensors need to be level?
They must face each other, so keep them at the same height.
Can sunlight cause 1-4?
Yes, a sun-blasted receiver can lose the beam. A sunblocker shield helps.
