Samsung Dryer Error Code HC: Meaning and Fix

Also shown as: hE, HC4, 1 HC
Reading the dryer display
On a dryer the code shows in the time-remaining window or as blinking status lights. Write down the characters before you press anything, because starting a new cycle usually clears the display. Samsung codes combine a digit with a letter, and some alternate with the cycle time.
Samsung displays numeric-plus-letter codes such as 4C, 5E or 21E, and many models run a Smart Care self-check through the app. Washers and dryers often use letter pairs, refrigerators use number plus E. The codes apply to model numbers such as DW80R5061US, DW80K7050US and DV45T6000EW; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.
What causes HC
- Clogged lint screen or vent
- Low incoming voltage on an electric dryer
- Gas valve or igniter issue on gas models
- Burned out heating element
- Failed high-limit thermostat or thermal fuse
How to fix it
- Clean the lint screen and the whole exhaust duct.
- Let the dryer cool for 30 minutes, then try a short cycle.
- On an electric dryer, have the outlet voltage checked at both legs.
- Test the thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat for continuity.
- Test the heating element for continuity.
- Replace any open component; fix the airflow first so the new part does not fail again.

Questions
Is HC a gas igniter code?
Not usually. Gas ignition problems appear as HC2 on many models.
Why does the dryer run but not heat?
An open thermal fuse or burned element leaves the drum turning cold.
Is this code dangerous?
Overheating is a fire risk, so stop using it until airflow and parts are checked.
