LG Washer Error Code dE: Meaning and Fix

Also shown as: dE1, E01
Reading the washer display
On a washer the code appears on the digital display or as a pattern of flashing cycle lights. Note it exactly, including any dashes or sub-codes, then unplug the washer for five minutes and run a short drain cycle to see whether it returns. LG codes are short letter pairs; a capital O differs from a zero.
LG appliances show short alphabetic codes (OE, IE, UE on washers, Er plus letters on refrigerators) and, on ThinQ models, a Smart Diagnosis option. LG also builds many Kenmore Elite units. The codes apply to model numbers such as LDF7774ST, LDT5678SS and DLEX3900B; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.
What causes dE
- Clothing caught between the door and the gasket
- Control glitch after a power event
- Door lock assembly or switch failing
- Door latch bent or worn
- Overloaded drum pushing against the door
How to fix it
- Open the door and pull any clothing or sock tails out of the gasket area.
- Reduce the load and close the door firmly until you hear it latch.
- Unplug the washer, wait a minute, then plug it in and press and hold Start/Pause for five seconds.
- Look at the latch hook on the door and the lock slot on the cabinet for bends or cracks.
- Run a short Rinse + Spin cycle to confirm the lock engages.
- If it still shows dE with a clear gasket and a straight latch, replace the door lock assembly.

Questions
What is the difference between dE1 and dE2?
On front loaders dE1 means the door did not register as closed, while dE2 means it is closed but never locked.
Can an overloaded washer cause dE?
Yes. A packed drum can press the door outward enough to keep the latch from engaging.
Will unplugging the washer reset dE?
It clears a temporary glitch. A dE that keeps coming back means the lock or latch hardware needs attention.
