LG Washer Error Code OE: Meaning and Fix

Also shown as: E03, E21
Reading the washer display
On a washer the code appears on the digital display or as a pattern of flashing cycle lights. Note it exactly, including any dashes or sub-codes, then unplug the washer for five minutes and run a short drain cycle to see whether it returns. LG codes are short letter pairs; a capital O differs from a zero.
LG appliances show short alphabetic codes (OE, IE, UE on washers, Er plus letters on refrigerators) and, on ThinQ models, a Smart Diagnosis option. LG also builds many Kenmore Elite units. The codes apply to model numbers such as LDF7774ST, LDT5678SS and DLEX3900B; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.
What causes OE
- Drain hose kinked, crushed behind the washer, or set too high
- Frozen drain hose or a clogged standpipe in a cold room
- Failed drain pump motor
- Oversudsing from too much or non-HE detergent, which lets the pump pull in air
- Lint, coins or socks blocking the drain pump filter
How to fix it
- Pause the cycle, unplug the washer and pull it forward enough to see the drain hose; straighten any kink and make sure it is not pinched against the wall.
- Open the small access door at the bottom front, set a shallow pan underneath, and unscrew the drain pump filter slowly to let trapped water out.
- Clear lint, coins and debris from the filter and its housing, then screw it back in until snug.
- Plug the washer in and run a Spin Only cycle on High. You should hear the pump hum and water leave during the first 15 seconds.
- If the tub was oversudsed, run a Tub Clean cycle and cut your detergent to the HE amount on the label.
- If the pump stays silent with a clean filter and clear hose, the pump motor or its wiring needs replacing.

Questions
Can I reset an OE error?
Yes. Fix the cause first, then unplug the washer for a minute, plug it in and run Spin Only. If OE returns right away the drain path is still blocked.
Why does OE show up after I used a lot of detergent?
Heavy suds trap air, and the pump then pulls bubbles instead of water. The controller reads that as a drain failure. A Tub Clean cycle and less detergent usually fixes it.
How do I know the drain pump itself is bad?
With the filter clean and the hose clear, a Spin Only cycle should make a humming noise. No hum, or a hum with no flow, points to the pump.
