LG Washer Error Code UE: Meaning and Fix

Also shown as: uE
Reading the washer display
On a washer the code appears on the digital display or as a pattern of flashing cycle lights. Note it exactly, including any dashes or sub-codes, then unplug the washer for five minutes and run a short drain cycle to see whether it returns. LG codes are short letter pairs; a capital O differs from a zero.
LG appliances show short alphabetic codes (OE, IE, UE on washers, Er plus letters on refrigerators) and, on ThinQ models, a Smart Diagnosis option. LG also builds many Kenmore Elite units. The codes apply to model numbers such as LDF7774ST, LDT5678SS and DLEX3900B; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.
What causes UE
- A single heavy item such as a comforter, or a few towels, in the load
- Washer not level or one foot not touching the floor
- Load too small or packed too tightly
- Worn shock absorbers on an older machine
- A laundry net washed by itself
How to fix it
- Pause the cycle and open the door once the drum has stopped.
- Spread the wet clothes evenly around the drum, and add or remove items so the drum is about two-thirds full.
- Wash bulky bedding with the Bedding or Duvet cycle and a medium spin speed, one item at a time.
- Rock the washer corner to corner; if it moves, adjust the feet with a wrench and confirm with a level on top.
- Restart with Spin Only to confirm the washer spins without thumping.
- If it stays unbalanced with an empty drum, have the suspension and shock absorbers checked.

Questions
Does UE mean my washer is broken?
Usually not. It is almost always a loading or leveling issue and clears after you rebalance the clothes.
Why does the washer add water during a spin?
It adds water to help the clothes float apart and rebalance. This can lengthen the cycle by roughly ten minutes.
How full should the drum be?
Aim for about two-thirds. Very small loads and overstuffed loads both bunch up.
