Reading the washer display

On a washer the code appears on the digital display or as a pattern of flashing cycle lights. Note it exactly, including any dashes or sub-codes, then unplug the washer for five minutes and run a short drain cycle to see whether it returns. LG codes are short letter pairs; a capital O differs from a zero.

LG appliances show short alphabetic codes (OE, IE, UE on washers, Er plus letters on refrigerators) and, on ThinQ models, a Smart Diagnosis option. LG also builds many Kenmore Elite units. The codes apply to model numbers such as LDF7774ST, LDT5678SS and DLEX3900B; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.

What causes LE

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the washer and wait five minutes to clear a temporary fault.
  2. Take out part of the load and try turning the drum by hand to feel for binding.
  3. Look into the gap around the drum lip and plate for coins or hair pins, and pull them out with tweezers.
  4. Restart with a lighter load and a short cycle.
  5. If the drum turns freely but the error repeats, check the motor connectors at the back.
  6. A repeating LE with a free-spinning drum points to the motor, hall sensor or board and needs service.

Questions

Why does LE appear with a full load?

Heavy wet clothing makes the motor draw extra current and the board stops it. Lighten the load.

Does LE1 mean the same thing?

On top loaders LE1 is a related rotation fault that points to a jam or gear problem.

Is the motor expensive to replace?

It is one of the pricier washer parts, so rule out jams and overloading first.
