Reading the washer display

On a washer the code appears on the digital display or as a pattern of flashing cycle lights. Note it exactly, including any dashes or sub-codes, then unplug the washer for five minutes and run a short drain cycle to see whether it returns. Samsung codes combine a digit with a letter, and some alternate with the cycle time.

Samsung displays numeric-plus-letter codes such as 4C, 5E or 21E, and many models run a Smart Care self-check through the app. Washers and dryers often use letter pairs, refrigerators use number plus E. The codes apply to model numbers such as DW80R5061US, DW80K7050US and DV45T6000EW; check the label on your unit to confirm yours.

What causes SE

How to fix it

Unplug it or switch off its breaker before you open any panel.

  1. Start a drain-and-spin cycle and watch whether water leaves the tub.
  2. Open the small access flap at the lower front, set a shallow pan under it and clean out the drain pump filter.
  3. Straighten the drain hose and check the standpipe for clogs.
  4. Make sure the hose is inserted no more than about 6 inches and the securing screw is in place.
  5. Reset power for one minute.
  6. If the filter and hose are clear and the pump hums without moving water, replace the drain pump.

Questions

Is SE the same as 5C on a Samsung washer?

Usually yes. Samsung notes that the 5 and S symbols can look alike on the display, so what reads as SE is normally the 5C or 5E drainage code. Samsung's published guidance for it is to clean the drain pump filter and check the drain hose.

Is it safe to open the drain pump filter?

Yes, after you unplug the washer. Put towels and a shallow pan under the small door at the bottom front, because the drum can hold water.

What if SE keeps coming back after cleaning the filter?

Check the drain hose for kinks and a standpipe that is too tight or clogged. If both are clear and the pump does not hum during a drain, the drain pump or its wiring needs service.
